Description

This talk presents the first scholarly monograph fully dedicated to the study of Celal Nuri, a leading member of the Committee of Union and Progress (CUP) from 1909 until the end of the First World War, who remained one of the most prominent figures in the Turkish Republican political elite until his death in 1938. His voluminous writings offer a window into formative debates on Islam, tradition, and modernity. These debates cover a wide gamut of issues, including modernizing politics, reforming religion, language, and women’s and minority rights.
