Standards, Evaluations and Appeals Policies

Evaluation

Most of our courses have university final examinations; others have take-home or classroom exams. In nearly all of our courses, your final mark is determined on the basis of your written work and some form of examination. In lecture-tutorial courses and seminars, your final mark is also based upon your participation.

We also expect regular attendance in all courses.

Your instructor will announce your course’s requirements and evaluation methods at the beginning of the term. Many of the course requirements can also be found with the course descriptions.

If you are unclear about your course’s requirements, you should ask your instructor for clarification.

Academic Standards

All students are expected to abide by the University of Toronto’s Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters.

Make sure you understand how to avoid plagiarism – the representation of the language, ideas and thoughts of another author as one’s own original work. Plagiarism can result in severe penalties under the Code of Academic Behaviour.

Appeals

How to Appeal a Grade

  • If you would like to appeal a grade you received in a Department of History course, view our PDF iconTerm Work Appeals Form.pdf.
  • You must appeal in writing to our associate chair, undergraduate.

How to Resolve Other In-Course Issues
