Backpack to Briefcase (b2B)

Dear History Student,

Are you wondering what you’ll do after you graduate? The Department of History invites you to participate in the Backpack to Briefcase (b2B) program so you can meet alumni from your department, build your professional network and practice your networking skills. Upcoming events are listed below.

b2B Student/Alumni Networking Events

Meet successful Arts & Science alumni at our Mentorship Meals, Speed Networking Nights, Career Panel Discussions and Industry Nights. Build your network, hear how alumni made their transitions through and out of university, and speak to them about your own path. Don’t forget to bring your questions (and your appetite!).

Speed Networking

Wondering what to do with your Arts & Science degree? Try b2B Speed Networking!

Speed Networking is a fun (and fast!) way to connect with U of T alumni who work in your field of study. Alumni from each of the areas of study below will come to campus to discuss their U of T education, the value of their degree and their pursuit of successful careers.

Each speed networking round lasts 5-10 minutes. Students remain at their stations throughout the speed networking session, while alumni guests move to a new station at the end of each round. Light refreshments will be served afterwards to give you a chance to mingle with alumni in a less formal setting.

2019 Speed Networking events will take place on the following dates:

Wednesday, September 25 | 6:00pm-8:00pm
Social Sciences

Thursday, September 26 | 6:00pm-8:00pm
Life Sciences

Thursday, October 3 | 6:00pm-8:00pm
Math, Physical and Computer Sciences

You’ll receive an invitation from your academic unit.

Industry Nights

Want to know how to plan your path forward and connect your current studies with a job after graduation? Industry nights allow you to mix and mingle with alumni for a very special b2B.

These large-scale networking receptions bring together alumni working in four industries (TBD) with students who are interested in pursuing a career in these fields.

The skills you gain from your Faculty of Arts & Science degree are relevant to many careers in these broad areas. Industry Nights are a wonderful opportunity to speak with Arts & Science alumni about their career paths, as well as with fellow U of T students who are also considering these fields.

2019 Industry Nights will take place on the following dates:

Wednesday November 20 | 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Careers in Government, Public Policy & Social Justice
Careers in Business & Finance

Thursday November 21 | 6:00pm – 8:00pm
Careers in Law
Careers in Healthcare & Wellness

You’ll receive an invitation from your academic unit.

Mentorship Meals

These intimate gatherings bring together alumni, faculty and students from the same discipline in a supportive, community atmosphere. Enjoy a delicious meal while discussing future career paths and the infinite possibilities your degree can open up.

Your academic unit will email you a Mentorship Meal invitation a few weeks before the event. Check your inbox for your b2B Mentorship Meal invite and sign up as soon as possible – spots usually fill up fast.

Next Steps Conference

Taking place in January 2020, Next Steps is an intensive and energizing conference for Arts & Science students and recent graduates. It is part career exploration, part preparation for life after graduation, and a great way for students and young alumni to start building their professional networks.

With a variety of speakers, career exploration panels, personal and professional development seminars and networking opportunities, Next Steps lets you explore options you may not have even known you had.

Planning for Next Steps 2020 is currently underway. Check back here or at the Events Calendar for updates and registration!

p.s. Full participation in the b2B program can be included on your Co-Curricular Record (CCR).
