Kate's interest in lighthouses and coastlines began during a summer undergraduate research internship on Campobello Island, New Brunswick, a small Canadian exclave in the Bay of Fundy. Her dissertation project looks at the social, technopolitical, and environmental lives of lighthouses and lighthouse keepers in the first decades after Confederation. Kate's research puts the littoral margins of Canadian territory at the centre of a period of rapid (and contentious) technological, territorial, social, and political change in Canada.
