Biography

I'm a historian who uses Chinese-language (and other) materials to tell the story of ordinary people's lives on big, comparative and small, nitty-gritty scales. Currently, I'm working on two SSHRC-funded projects; one about suicide in late imperial and modern China, the other on the Sinosphere and global responses to COVID-19. In addition, I'm collaborating with ZHANG Letian of Fudan U. on a two-volume book about rural life in the early Mao years. I've also published articles on gender, sexuality, "deviance," and everyday life in China from imperial times through the 20th century. At UTSG, I teach undergrad and grad courses covering Chinese history from prehistory through the 21st century as well as offerings on sexuality and gender. I run the informal Chinese History Grad Group and the department's Faculty & Postdoc Writing Workshop. I'm an affiliated Faculty Member with the Department of East Asian Studies. Folks interested in working with me for graduate study, RAships, independent research—or in joining the grad group or the writing group—should feel free to contact me directly.
