DESCRIPTION:\nWhen and Where: \nWednesday, January 30, 2019 12:00 pm to 1
 :00 pm \n Room 2098 \n Sidney Smith Hall \n 100 St George St, Toronto, O
 N M5S 3G3 \n\nDescription: \nProfessor Maureen Lux (History Chair, Brock
University) will discuss racially segregated hospital care and the history
of the so-called “Indian Hospitals” in the context of the mid-twentieth-c
entury construction of Medicare. Canadians have only very recently begun a
serious dialogue about the destructive role of Residential Schools in our
shared history.  Like the schools, Indian Hospitals are nodes in the bro
ader web of policies and relations that sought to undermine and isolate Fi
rst Nations and Inuit communities in the interests of non-Indigenous Canad
a.Professor Lux's research explores the impact of colonization on the heal
th of Indigenous peoples and the role of medicine and the state in maintai
ning health disparities.  Her books, Medicine that Walks: Disease, Medic
ine and Canadian Plains Native People 1880-1940 and Separate Beds: A Histo
ry of Indian Hospitals in Canada, are widely studied and have won multipl
e national awards from the Canadian Historical Association and the Royal S
ociety of Canada. This is a free event and no registration is required. \n
