EVENT CANCELLED - Segregating Care: "Indian Hospitals" in Canada

When and Where

Wednesday, January 30, 2019 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
Room 2098
Sidney Smith Hall
100 St George St, Toronto, ON M5S 3G3

Description

Professor Maureen Lux (History Chair, Brock University) will discuss racially segregated hospital care and the history of the so-called “Indian Hospitals” in the context of the mid-twentieth-century construction of Medicare. Canadians have only very recently begun a serious dialogue about the destructive role of Residential Schools in our shared history.  Like the schools, Indian Hospitals are nodes in the broader web of policies and relations that sought to undermine and isolate First Nations and Inuit communities in the interests of non-Indigenous Canada.

Professor Lux's research explores the impact of colonization on the health of Indigenous peoples and the role of medicine and the state in maintaining health disparities.  Her books, Medicine that Walks: Disease, Medicine and Canadian Plains Native People 1880-1940 and Separate Beds: A History of Indian Hospitals in Canada, are widely studied and have won multiple national awards from the Canadian Historical Association and the Royal Society of Canada.

This is a free event and no registration is required.
