Boundaries: An Undergraduate Research Colloquium

Boundaries range from national boundaries to political boundaries of the public and the private. They are frail, arbitrary, and prone to collapsing into each other. How are ‘limits’ created throughout history? This year the History Students’ Association Research Symposium will address the issue of “boundaries” as it relates to spatial, temporal, and discursive practices. With the current state of global politics, the topic is immediate and not in the abstract.

We will be releasing the schedule with a list of panels and speakers shortly. We have many fantastic presenters coming from a wide variety of disciplines, none of whom are ‘bound’ to these disciplines.

Our first panel will deal with borders in the academic study of postcoloniality, temporality, and activist organizing. Our second panel will explore early-modern ideologies and the limits of violence. Lastly, our third panel will address boundaries in the creation of the colonial and modern nation-states. Students will present short 20-25 minute presentations, followed by a 10 minute question and answer period at the end of each panel.
