This site exists as a supplement to an on-going research paper for a graduate history course on Material Culture at the University of Toronto. The paper, still in its formative stages, deals with the revival of interest in Scottish subjects, traditions, and paraphenalia in North American popular culture in recent years. This revival encompasses things like the "All Things Scottish" shop sketch on Saturday Night Live, Hollywood films such as Braveheart and Rob Roy, and the Cape Breton fiddling sensation Ashley MacIsaac. |

I've divided this web site into a number of sections. Section one deals with one framework for the examination of Scottish symbols, the idea of the "invented tradition". Sections two to four identify three research approaches I mapped out at the start of this project. Finally, I intend section five to be a periodically updated page that advises site visitors on the changes to the paper in the course of my research. Enjoy! |
