Professor Rutherford specializes in cultural history, Canadian history, and the study of twentieth century popular culture.  His most recent publications include Endless Propaganda: The Advertising of Public Goods (2000), Weapons of Mass Persuasion: Marketing the War against Iraq (2004), and A world Made Sexy: Freud to Madonna (2007).  His current projects explore the use of culture, most especially publicity, as a project of rule and the figure of the sovereign in recent popular culture, notably in movies, television, and video games.
