Hui Kian Kwee’s research and teaching interests are the processes and theories of colonialism, capitalism, Chinese ethnicity, migration and networks in maritime Southeast Asia from the seventeenth century to the present. Her publications include The Political Economy of Java’s Northeast Coast, c. 1740-1800: elite synergy (Brill, 2006) and various articles on these topics. Her current projects explore the cultural-religious strategies of Chinese diasporic entrepreneurship and integrate studies of South China and Southeast Asia.
