Field: Aboriginal history, Pre-Confederation Canada, ethnohistory

Heidi Bohaker’s research and teaching fields include North American Aboriginal history (with a focus on the northeast and Great lakes regions), pre-Confederation Canada and ethnohistorical research methodologies.  She has published articles on the significance of kinship networks (clan identity) to Anishinaabe people in the Great Lakes region and methods for reading pictographic expressions of Aboriginal identity on treaty documents.  Current projects include a book about the political history of Anishinaabe peoples in the eastern Great lakes from 1600 to 1840, a broad comparative study of treaties in both Canadian and US contexts, and with Franca Iacovetta, an investigation into Canada’s Department of Citizenship and Immigration programs and policies toward Aboriginal peoples after World War II.
