Field: 18th and 19th century Spanish America and slavery

Professor Blanchard's research interests include the social history of Spanish America in the late colonial and independence periods, as well as slavery. He is presently examining the rise of nationalism in late colonial Argentia. His publications include The Origins of the Peruvian Labor Movement, 1883-1919 (1982), Markham in Peru: The Travels of Clements R. Markham, 1852-1853 (1991), Slavery and Abolition in Early Republican Peru (1992), and Under the Flags of Freedom: Slave Soldiers and the Wars of Independence in Spanish South America (2008).
